Twixt Sea and Fell - Under Black Combe

black combe lake district

How to navigate this walk

  1. Start - from the layby under St Mary's Church, Whitbeck, walking up the narrow lane to cross the Millergill Beck, with its waterfalls, at Gate House. Keep ahead around the lower slope of Black Combe, crossing several small becks until coming to a track beside Fell Cottage.
  2. Follow the track down left just before the next beck and very carefully cross the busy main road, and go straight ahead down the narrow lane. Pass small Barfield Tarn on the right. Opposite a small wood turn right up a track towards Barfield House and ruin.
  3. At lane turn left and almost immediately take stile on the right to cross field and beside a beck go under railway bridge, over footbridge to track to Annaside.
  4. Turn right for Kiskin, where pass farm along lane. Look out for track leading off right just before Hyton.
  5. Continue straight along this track until there is a sharp turn off to the right. Keep on until meeting the road from Bootle Station to Broadwater.
  6. Turn left, farm road curves round to Seker Farm, passing disused Coastguard lookout post on cliff edge to right.
  7. At Seker Farm keep straight ahead through gate, and follow instructions posted by next gate for detour.
  8. This crosses two fields along the cliff top, at the far end of which go round edge of field to high gate, which leads to path down gully to the shore.
  9. Bear left along clear path. Cross bridge, bearing left again and keep ahead until reaching track back to Annaside. Turn left up this track for very short distance, take stile right to cross short distance to another track. Here keep right on track.
  10. Over stile the footpath goes around "The Bog Hole" before regaining track leading up to Gutterby Farm. Pass this farm, keeping ahead along lane which passes under the railway and meets the main road directly opposite the Start.
