Finding motivation
Keeping motivated is one of the toughest aspects of any exercise or diet regime. Although walking is pretty easy to keep going, even the best of us fall by the wayside occasionally. So how should we keep motivated and push on? Here's our top tips.
- Get a pedometer and track your progress. Walk further, walk faster. Keep track of your times/distances and try to improve.
- Register for an event. The more challenging the better - this will encourage you to keep training. You'll then get a massive sense of satisfaction later on.
- Walk with others. The stigma of missing a session is doubled when someone else is relying on you. Get a reliable partner and go with them regularly - it will be mutually beneficial.
- Join a walking club
- Go to new locations
- Set goals for yourself and always try to achieve them.
- Get some music - wearing an iPod or similar MP3 player can help you stave off any boredom when walking or exercising.
- Find a time to walk and stick to it. If you have a hectic schedule, try and set a time apart that you know will always be available. This routine encourages you to persist, rather than simply saying "oh I'll do that tomorrow". The mañana attitude is the worst enemy of progress!
- Keep a logbook or journal of your walks and progress.
- Enjoy the walk! If you feel like you're not enjoying it, try and work out why. If it's simply because you're lazy then try and find an activity you like.
